Another Lovely Day in Chinatown

Very exciting day here at the office. I am wearing a really sharp suit I bought in Rome three years ago. The zipper on the skirt broke the second time I wore it and I just got it fixed in August. I carted the un-wearable skirt during two house moves and finally made it worthwhile. Oh the joys of temporary periods of non-laziness!!

Another downside of working in Chinatown is the live poultry place across the street. This place would make me absolutely swear off chicken if I wasn't already a vegetarian. At approximately 8:30 every morning, the hapless chickens pull up in an open truck (so they have a good view of the traffic on their journey) and are unloaded. During the unloading process, copious amounts of chicken-doo and feathers are spread all over the sidewalk which is immediately hosed down as soon as the empty truck pulls away.

Now I have walked by this place a million,, stomach turning times but today was the worst. I usually cross the street before I get to the poultry store just so I don't have to see the chickens but today I forgot. I was directly in front of the open door when I heard a baby uttering short, staccato cries followed by a "thwack" and silence. Then I heard it again. It was the friggin' chickens! They squawk right before their heads are chopped off because they know what is about to happen! Just an awful way to start the day. For me and the chickens. Makes me miss Post Office Square, big time.
